All About Two Factor Authentication & It's Usability

Remember the days when you could access your accounts with just one password? That will soon be forgotten.

What is 2FA?

In an attempt to defeat hackers and strengthen account security online, two-factor authentication is becoming more and more popular. 2FA is an authentication security system where Users provide two separate authentication factors as part of a security procedure before logging into an application. One in all, the term "2FA" typically refers to an additional layer of security over a password.

Why do we need it?

These days, Simple passwords are ineffective against the vaguely advanced password cracking methods used by hackers. Despite being crucial, usernames and passwords are easily vulnerable to outside parties and are subject to online fraud and theft.

We require two-factor authentication because it protects our account and restricts third-party access more successfully than using a password alone to secure your sensitive information. Even If someone tries to hack an account protected by 2FA, they’ll still need to know the second access factor, like an SMS verification code or your fingerprint, to access your account.

2FA is an additional security measure used to confirm that users attempting to log into an online account are who they claim to be.

How does 2FA work?

Two factor authentication uses two unrelated authentication methods that are used to secure your accounts.

The general, multi-step procedure for two-factor authentication remains the same:

  • The app or the website asks the user to log in.
  • Users enter their basic credentials, usually username and password. The server for the website then discovers a match and recognizes the user.
  • The authenticator application which is used to authenticate the account generates TOTP (time-based one time password) which the user has to enter in the given time period in the secondary login session in order to log into the account.
  • After confirming both factor, the user is authenticated and given access to the app or website.

With 2FA, the account cannot be accessed if just one of these factors is compromised. Therefore, it is highly unlikely that someone else would obtain your second-factor information even if your password or phone were stolen. The use of two-factor authentication is therefore important for maintaining your online security.

So Don't wait! Enable multi-factor authentication right away for all your accounts through one of the best app!
